PGAV announces Jason Smith as President of the PGAV Board

Public Galleries Association of Victoria (PGAV) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jason Smith, Director & CEO, Geelong Gallery as its President.

Jason takes on the mantle from outgoing President Louise Tegart, Director, Art Gallery of Ballarat. Louise stepped down from the PGAV Board at the recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) having completed a maximum two terms in office. Jason will be supported by Vice President, Georgia Cribb, Gallery Director, Bunjil Place.

Jason was elected to the PGAV Board in 2020. He hosted the launch of PGAV’s landmark Our Creative Heart initiaitve at Parliament House in 2023 and has played a key role in communicating the critical investment priorities of Victoria’s public gallery sector to government.

Jason said of his appointment, “I thank the Board of the PGAV for entrusting me to fill the role of President. I look forward to continuing to promote that our galleries are the creative heart of our communities. The PGAV Board is acutely aware of the resourcing and infrastructural challenges facing our sector, and we are committed to ensuring the professional development and growth of our constantly evolving sector. We look forward to serving our members and colleagues.”

He went on to say, “May I pay tribute to the exceptional leadership of our immediate past President Louise Tegart, Director, Art Gallery of Ballarat. I also thank Georgia Cribb for continuing in her role as Vice President. Georgia’s commitment to the work of the Board is outstanding. The entire PGAV Board, our tireless Executive team, and our expert observers are focussed on the vital work of informing and advocating for public galleries.

At the recent AGM, PGAV welcomed to its Board Katy Mitchell, Visual Arts Coordinator, Ararat Gallery TAMA and Serena Wong, Curator Collections, Warrnambool Art Gallery as Regional Gallery Representatives, and has since appointed Andrew Tetzlaff, Senior Curator, RMIT Culture as Metropolitan Gallery Representative.

The Public Galleries Association of Victoria (PGAV) acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Owners of the lands where our office is located, and all Traditional Owners of country throughout Victoria and Australia. We recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples enduring traditions and continuing creative cultures. We pay our respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
