Arts Centre Melbourne to open Australian Museum of Performing Arts in iconic Hamer Hall

Monday May 12th, 2025

Arts Centre Melbourne has announced it will open the Australian Museum of Performing Arts (AMPA) within Hamer Hall in December 2025. Situated on the upper terrace overlooking the Birrarung (Yarra River), AMPA will become a major cultural destination celebrating Australia’s vibrant performing arts legacy and showcasing stories from around the world.
In its first phase, the museum will feature nearly 500 square metres of curated exhibitions, including rare and iconic pieces from the Australian Performing Arts Collection - the largest of its kind in the nation. Items from cultural icons such as Kylie Minogue, Barry Humphries, Nick Cave, Hugh Jackman, and Dame Joan Sutherland will be on display.
Supported by philanthropic contributions and Creative Victoria, AMPA will expand to 800 square metres in Phase 2. The inaugural exhibition will be announced in September, ahead of the gallery's official opening in December.
