After nine years as Director & CEO of Geelong Gallery, Jason Smith has announced he will be stepping into the role of Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, commencing February 2025.

Throughout his tenure at Geelong Gallery, Jason has been integral in the Gallery’s reputation for curating academic and scholarly exhibitions, and success in hosting major touring exhibitions. The Gallery has also been recognised for the significant role it plays in the city and region. Under his leadership, the Gallery has won awards in Business Excellence for Corporate Social Responsibility and Inclusive and Accessible Business, and Cultural Tourism awards at State and National levels.
Geelong Gallery Board President, Eliza Holt said: “Jason’s legacy at the Gallery is and will be immense and will be borne out for years to come. Jason’s tireless work in supporting and advocating for the Gallery’s redevelopment, his leadership role within Geelong and the region, and his contribution to the Gallery will be remembered and celebrated.”
Reflecting on his time at Geelong Gallery, Jason shared: ‘It has been an enormous privilege to lead Geelong Gallery since 2016, and I pay immediate tribute to the Board for its dedication to this great cultural institution, and to my colleagues for their consistently outstanding work and service to our community.
On his upcoming role, Jason added: “I am honoured to have been entrusted with the role of Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia. The principle that has guided my leadership is to ensure an accessible and inclusive experience of art that enriches peoples’ lives.”
As a member of the PGAV Board since 2020 and its President since July 2024, Jason has been a strong advocate for public galleries in Victoria. His leadership in championing the ‘Our Creative Heart’ campaign and effectively communicating the sector's critical investment priorities to government has made a lasting impact.
