Open Collection Stores

Tuesday 5 Sep 2023, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Open Storeroom Tour (1)

Collection stores – a vital part of gallery operations yet these spaces have remained off-limits to audiences in Australia until now. Join us for a tour of the newly opened City of Melbourne Art and Heritage Collection store and Art Centre Melbourne’s soon to be opened Australian Performing Arts Collection store. See how these stores are providing audiences with behind-the-scenes access to collections, and building awareness of preservation, conservation and digitisation.

In this special industry event, Eddie Butler-Bowdon, City of Melbourne’s Art and Heritage Collection Program Manager and Samantha Hamilton, Head of Collections, Preservation and Access at Arts Centre Melbourne will share insights into how the stores came into being, what was involved in their realisation – including management of risk to the collection, and the benefits to be gained for organisations and audiences.

Participants will meet at Melbourne Town Hall for the first tour, followed by lunch. Participants will then reconvene at Hamer Hall for the second tour.

Places are limited – maximum 2 people per gallery.
book early to avoid disappointment.

Cost: $40 incl GST (includes lunch)
