GALLERIES IN VICTORIA

Montsalvat

Back

Founded in 1934, Montsalvat is Australia’s oldest continuously active artists’ community. Set amongst landscaped gardens, beautiful water features and heritage buildings, it is a place where art in all its forms is made and taught; and art’s transformative power is celebrated through exhibitions, festivals, concerts, workshops and on-site studios.

Painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film, gold and silversmithing, fine woodwork, ceramics, glass, fashion/textiles, music and puppeteering are just some of the mediums featured and supported through Montsalvat’s Arts Program.

The Program is open to artists from local, national and international regions and its array of performance spaces have been consistently chosen as the preferred venue for some of Australia’s best music ensembles including the Flinders Quartet, Trio Tnima Mundi and the Collide Trio.

Located in Eltham, Montsalvat is only thirty minutes from central Melbourne and close to Victoria’s Yarra Valley vineyards. It welcomes visitors from across Australia and beyond with a unique blend of art, nature, hospitality and the mystique of a rich cultural legacy.

Permanent Collection

The Montsalvat Collection comprises over 2000 artworks dated from as early as the 1920s, prior to Montsalvat's founding, all the way up to the 1990s, highlighting the longevity of studio practice onsite. The collection covers a diverse range of media, from painting to sculpture, ceramics and jewellery, and other antiques and furnishings. Not only does the collection feature the most expansive overview of the output of Justus Jorgensen, but also of many other key artists in both the history of Montsalvat itself and the surrounding local artistic scene, such as Matcham Skipper, Lesley Sinclair, Madeleine Jorgensen, Jim Minogue, and Sonia Skipper
