Markings on Country brings together powerful voices and visions of local Koori artists. This exhibition celebrates the deep cultural, spiritual and ancestral connections with Country embedded in every brushstroke, carving and mark made.
Country is more than a place. It is a living entity, rich with stories, knowledge and identity. For First Nations people the act of making art is an act of cultural continuation, marking Country with memory, meaning and presence.
These connections are expressed through a wide range of artistic forms, from traditional to contemporary.
Markings on Country features works that reflect the strength and resilience of Aboriginal culture, presenting ochres on canvas, wood carving, printmaking and mixed media.
This exhibition is a celebration of art. It is a space for reflection, recognition and respect. It offers you the opportunity to engage with lived experiences, histories and cultural knowledge of Aboriginal people.
We invite you to walk with us through this powerful collection of works, to listen deeply, and to see the Country through the eyes of its custodians.
