Foundations – Making them work

Monday 23 Jul 2018, 10:30 AM – 3:30 PM

Foundations can play an important role in raising funds for galleries. In this
session you will gain insights from leaders in the field about what makes an effective foundation. Topics will include governance, recruiting the right people, setting targets, measuring outcomes and evaluating performance.

Anouska Phizacklea, Director, Monash Gallery of Art, will provide insights into
the financial structure and governance of a foundation within a local government context; and Mr Mark Guirguis, Chair of the Art Gallery of Ballarat Foundation, will discuss his foundation’s successes in achieving ambitious targets and how they’ve evaluated performance.

After providing some fundamental background and context to foundations within a gallery setting, Steven Richardson from Creative Partnerships Australia and Siu Chan from City of Yarra will facilitate a dynamic open discussion about the pros and cons of managing a foundation in today’s climate, explore with participants where they are individually placed, and tackle the difficulties their foundations may be facing.

The day will be rounded out with an introduction to ACCA’s current exhibition,
A Lightness of Spirit is the Measure of Happiness, curated by Hannah Presley.
