The adverse effects of climate change are being widely experienced across Victoria.
The state’s cultural heritage places and objects are not immune from these impacts. Indeed, climate change often worsens existing issues and creates new risks.
Heritage places can play a key role in climate adaptation and mitigation. It often takes fewer resources, and generates less waste, to adapt an existing structure than to construct a new one.
Policy makers, heritage agencies and the managers of heritage places need to act together to make the most of these mitigation opportunities while also responding to the very real threats.
The Heritage Council of Victoria recognises we are at a critical point for action. In partnership with Heritage Victoria (Department of Transport and Planning), it has developed resources to assist policy makers and managers of heritage places and objects.
These resources will be added to over time.
