PGAV End of Year Event

The PGAV End of Year Event began with a special tour of the Tjukurrtjanu: Origins of Western Desert Art exhibition at NGV Australia, followed by a three-course luncheon and Thought Leadership Panel exploring Co-created Visitor Experiences.

Tour of Tjukurrtjanu
Judith Ryan, Senior Curator Indigenous Art, National Gallery of Victoria and John Kean, essayist for Tjukurrtjanu and Director, NETS Victoria provided a guided tour of Tjukurrtjanu: Origins of Western Desert Art. This important exhibition features 200 of the first paintings produced at Papunya in 1971 to 72 by the founding artists of the Western Desert art movement. These seminal works sparked the genesis of the Papunya Tula movement, now internationally recognised as one of the most important events in Australian art history. Judith and John provided an insightful tour of the exhibition.

Thought Leadership Panel: Co-Created Visitor Experiences
Leading researchers and practitioners discussed current approaches to “co-created” visitor experiences. The panel was be Chaired by Dr Jody Evans, Senior Lecturer – Marketing, Melbourne Business School.

The panellist were:
Joanna Minkiewicz, PhD candidate at Melbourne Business School – Joanna outlined best practice in co-created visitor experiences and presented a case study of Kelvingrove in Scotland;
Anne Kershaw, Lecturer in Arts and Entertainment Management and PhD candidate at Deakin University – Anne presented her research into “co-curated” experiences in public galleries; and
Scott Killeen, General Manager of Visitor Experiences at Melbourne Zoo – Scott detailed a number of programs he has developed for Zoos Victoria as well as a toolkit which enables staff to take visitors on a journey where they learn about conservation of animals and their environment.
