Jo Grant

All Prize Winners Paraded is a photographic exploration of Australian agricultural shows. These annual events have persisted despite societal shifts that have seen small towns de-populated. Grant is motivated by her own experiences of growing up in the country and this series is an attempt to use the microcosm of the rural shows to examine broader issues about an Australian cultural identity.

The Idea of the Animal

12 October to 18 November

Presented by RMIT Gallery and the Melbourne International Arts Festival

The Idea of the Animal investigates the complex relationships between humans and animals in contemporary visual culture. Human-animal relationships are hot and cold, visible and invisible, sanctioned and taboo. Animals are integral to our everyday life: we keep pets; watch wildlife films and TV programmes and visit the spectacle of the zoo; consume them as food and clothing, and use them in scientific laboratories; they appear in fairy tales, advertising and literature, and we depict them in art. This exhibition features contemporary artists from Australia, NZ, USA and Europe, whose work addresses the lives of animals from a human perspective.

Artists include Karen Abernathy (Aus), Bruce Armstrong (Aus), Joseph Beuys (Ger), Jazmina Cininas (Aus), Peter Cole (Aus), Barbara Dover (Aus), Hpert Duprat (Fr), Peter Ellis (Aus), Katrin Isabel Ernst (Ger), Kate James (Aus), Nicholas Lampert (USA), Kevin Mortensen (Aus), David Noonan (Aus), Selina Ou (Aus), Diego Perroni (Ita), Simon Perry (Aus), Lisa Roet (Aus), Joan Ross (Aus), Paul Ryan (Aus), Angela Singer (NZ), Kathy Temin (Aus). Curated by Dr Linda Williams and Suzanne Davies
